In vitro fertilization, commonly known as IVF, is an assisted reproductive technology (IVF) that helps childless couples conceive a baby in case any of the partners is suffering from infertility.
As a part of IVF treatment, eggs are first retrieved from the womb of the mother or the donor female (in case mother’s eggs are not viable). The mother or donor are sometimes given medications to trigger the production of multiple eggs, which are then retrieved from the ovaries for external fertilization.
This infertility treatment is then used to fertilize eggs and sperms retrieved from the father or a male donor. The eggs and the sperms are mixed in a petridish and cultured in a medium. A healthy zygote is then transferred to the womb of the mother at the blastocyst stage. This zygote thus formed is also known as test tube baby.
In vitro fertilization cost varies from one country to another. It is one of the most advanced forms of fertility treatments and the total IVF treatment cost depends on the number of treatment cycles that the female is made to undergo for successful conception.
