LASIK stands for Laser in Situ Keratomileusis, which is a laser refractive surgery intended to correct the eye's refractive error to reduce the need for other visual aids. During LASIK surgery, a specially trained eye surgeon will reshape the front surface of the cornea in a unique pre-specified pattern for each patient eye so that the light entering the eye will focus on the retina without the use of any corrective lenses. It is commonly recommended as an alternative to glasses or contact lenses to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.
LASIK eye surgery– Eligibility
Not everyone is a good candidate for vision correction surgery. Following are some of the criteria for judging the eligibility of a patient for undergoing LASIK treatment in India:
LASIK eye surgery- Preparation
If you decide to go ahead with LASIK surgery, you will need an evaluation by the ophthalmologist to determine if you are a good candidate. Your doctor will evaluate the shape and thickness of your cornea, the size of your pupil, and check for refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and any other eye conditions.
If you are an ideal candidate, you would receive a set of instructions to avoid complications during and after the surgery. These instructions may include:
LASIK eye surgery- The Procedure
LASIK eye surgery is typically a pain-free procedure, and it takes 20 minutes or less time in the operating room. The LASIK procedure generally involves two steps; the creation of the corneal flap by a precision flap-making instrument and the reshaping of the cornea with a programmed laser.
Before the procedure, you will lie on your back in a reclining chair in an exam room containing the laser system. Once you are positioned, eye drops are applied to numb your eyes and to prevent any discomfort during the procedure. The eyelids are kept open, using an instrument called the lid speculum. A microkeratome (small blade) or a laser keratome (cutting laser) is used to make a small hinged flap away from the front of your eye to access the cornea.
An excimer laser is positioned over the eye while the patient is asked to stare at a light. With each pulse of the laser beam, a tiny amount of corneal tissue is removed. After reshaping the cornea, the flap is laid back into place. The flap usually heals without stitches.
Following the procedure, pain medication or eye drops are administered. An eye shield is placed to protect the eye from the external environment. A follow-up appointment may be needed one to two days after surgery to remove the eye shield and to check for any complication. A stay of five to seven days required for undergoing LASIK surgery in India.
