With its divine ambiance and tranquillity, Pavana Sarovar is one of the most appealing tourist destinations in Nandgaon in the district of Mathura. It is a lake located on the highway road to Kamavan and is believed that a holy dip in the water here sanctifies one’s mind, body, and soul. This pristine lake was built by Pavan Gopa, father of Vishakha (one of the friends of Radha, the love interest of Lord Krishna), and hence named Pavana Sarovar. The term Pavana Sarovar also stands for ‘Purifying Lake’. Such is the reverence of this place in the hearts of devotees that no one leaves without taking a dip into the pristine water. The legend behind the high-esteem of this popular religious site in Nandgaon is that Lord Krishna and his friends used to bring their cattle to this place after returning from the pastures.
Another folklore related to this well-known tourist destination in Nandgaon states that once Nand Maharaj Ji (Lord Krishna’s father) wanted to pay a visit to King Prayagraj. Also, he wanted to take a holy bath in the surreal confluence of the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, which is presently known as Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj. For that, he made a plan to visit the place. Not desiring to get separated from his father, Lord Krishna requested him to visit him on the pious day of Akshay Tritiya. However, on the day of Akshay Tritiya, Nand Maharaj was astounded to see King Prayagraj in his town who came to take a sacred dip in the water of Pavana Sarovar. On knowing the piety of Pavana Sarovar, Nand Maharaja Ji decided to not to visit Sangam and instead bathed in the water of this beautiful lake. Apart from the lake, one can visit the seat of Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya. On the lake’s northern bank, the temple of Pavan Bihari is also a significant pilgrimage attraction in Nandgaon. There is a ritual, in which, pilgrims first have to take a holy bath in the water of Pavana Sarovar and then visit the Pavana Bihari temple. Even today, a large footfall of pilgrims can also be witnessed on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya.
