This high altitude lake is sheltered between the mountains beneath the Jelepla Pass, surrounded by the unexplored pine forest and profound slopes. Fed by melted waters of the icy mountains - Menmecho Lake acts as the source of river Rangpo-chu and is one of the river tributaries of river Teesta. Just like a beach, the shore of this magnanimous lake is covered with sand, while its crystal clear water is flourished with trouts, and hence, is considered as one of the premier cultivation centres of trouts in Sikkim. Thousands of tourists and trekkers visit here every year to witness the ever changing colors of Menmecho Lake.
What To Do And See
Along with Menmecho Lake, visitors can admire the beauty of Tsomgo Lake and Nathang Valley, residing at a distance of 4 to 5 km. To get drenched with the mesmerising views of great mighty mountains visit Nathula Pass and Jelep La Pass. Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple also situated on the way to Menmecho lake. The wildlife enthusiast can explore immense wildlife in the Zuluk Wildlife Area, while to witness huge Alpine Plantation, one can go to Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary.
Best Time To Visit
This beautiful lake stays covered with snow from early winter to late spring from January to May. One can visit Menmecho Lake during the months of June to Dec.
Getting Here
Menmecho lake is situated in the East of Sikkim, around 60 kms away from Gangtok and 20 km ahead of Changu Lake and 20 km before Tsomgo lake. One can take a shared Jeep / SSRTC Buses from Geyzing or from Pelling to reach here. Private taxis are also available from the mentioned places. A narrow 4 kilometers winding road beside Baba Mandir guide you directly to Memencho Lake.
