This immaculate and a divine place located in the upper reaches of Gangtok, Hanuman Tok is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the Hindu monkey God. It is a temple complex that is swarmed by devotees from all over the country. This shrine in Sikkim is located 11 kms from Gangtok,on the road to another famous attraction, Nathula. A visit to this place will make you feel spiritual; as soon as you ascend the stairs, a far distant prayer comes into sight and religious music is heard. The best part of it all, is the view one gets, which comprises a site of a small part of Gangtok town and the alluring neighbouring hills and valleys.
The legends has it, Hanuman flew down to this very spot to rest while flying with Sanjeevani (herb) Mountain from the Himalayas to Lanka to save Lord Rama's brother, Lakshman. There is also a small temple of Saibaba near the Hanuman Temple. While here, you can also see several stupas and chortens and just before the entrance to the stairway, you will find a cremation ground of Namgyal Royal family of Sikkim. This religious place in Gangtok is surrounded by lush greenery and a view of the third largest peak in the world, Mount Kanchenjunga. Hanuman Tok is currently looked after by the Indian Army.
