Sindhudurg Fort Maharashtra
Sindhudurg Fort is situated on a projection of the Arabian Sea, off the Maharashtrian coast in the western part of India. The fort lies on the Malvan town of the Sindhudurg district in Konkan region in the state of Maharashtra, which is about 450 km. to the south of the city of Mumbai and is a popular tourist attraction of Maharashtra tourism. This fort is a safeguarded monument. The construction of this fort began in the year 1664 on the 25th of November. This fort was built in about three years from 1664-1667. The huge walls of this fort were constructed to serve as a obstruction and to keep the enemies at bay. The fort exhibits impressive engineering and the entrance to this architectural marvel is concealed in a brilliant way, so that it cannot be located from outside. For the construction of this awe-inspiring fort, massive amount of iron that is about 4000 mounds was used. The sea fort spans across 48 acres and has 3 km. rampart in length with 30 feet high and 12 feet thick walls.
History of the Attraction
This fort was built during of the Maratha ruler Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This fort was erected to counter rise the influence of the foreign rulers that is the Dutch, English, Portuguese and the French merchants and to repress the rising of the Janjira and the Siddis. The reception of this fort was done under the guidance of Hiroji Indulkar in 1656. This fort is now a heritage site.
Getting There
In oder to reach this fort, tourists have to board safety boats from the place Malvan, through the channel in between the Padmagad and the Dhontara islands. It takes 15 minutes for travellers to get to the jetty of the Sinhudurg Fort. Guides are available to take tourists inside the jetty. Malvan is well connected to the major cities and towns and private and state buses run from Ratanagiri,Pune, Mumbai, Kolhapur and Panaji to Malvan. The nearest airport to the fort is the Dabolim International Airport at Goa, at a distance of 80km. and the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport at Mumbai, which is 344 km. away. The nearest railways stations are Sawantawdi and Kudal, which are at a distance 35 km. and 25 km. respectively. This fort is one of the famous attractions of Maharashtra tour.
