The Sasthamkotta Lake is one of the biggest freshwater lakes in Kerala, with an attractive village nearby. One can see an ancient Sastha Temple, located close to the lake, which lends its name to the town. This temple is dedicated to both Lord Ganesha and Lord Ayyappa and it makes Sasthamkota, an important pilgrim center. Surrounded by hills and forests, the temple has thousands of monkeys living in the premises, the existence of whom is considered holy. These monkeys are believed to be the faithful followers of the ruling deity.
The monkeys living here are friendly and harmless and the devotees visiting the temple feed these creatures with nuts and fruits.

Water supply to the Kollam Town is met by purifying the water from this lake. Sasthamkota is also a famous shooting location, where the scenes of many popular movies and TV serials are shot, like Inapravukal (1965), Ente Hridayathinte Udama (2002), Kuttisrank (2009), etc. Lately, a lot of people are using this location for post marriage video album coverage, all because of the natural surroundings, the Sasthamkota is known for.
