Symbol of Protection
Now disappeared in the folds of time, once upon a time it was a symbol of hope for Portuguese sailors who dreamt of trading spices in the konkan coast and protecting themselves from naval fight of European nations.
Several attacks from Dutch Squadron in 1604 and 1606 led to the construction of this grand Fort in 1609, which was completed during the time of Dom Filippe’s rule in 1612 under the Viceroy of Ruy Tavara.

The fort is a marvelous example of Italian architecture and Portuguese military architecture. It can store 20, 00,000 gallons of water in its enormous cistern.
Grandeur of the fort during Portuguese rule can be imagined by seeing its formidable citadel, gun powder storage, iron studded doors, secret passageways and a capacity up to 200 cannons in the upper fort.
The lower Fort is surrounded by bastions. Portuguese Ships used to come here for fresh supply of water. This area is now converted into a luxury hotel- The Fort Aguada Hotel, which is the best place to stay in Fort Aguada.
The most interesting sight to behold in this fort are the Fresh water springs called Mother of Water or Mae De Agna. Brilliant architecture and mesmerizing views of the Arabian Sea makes Fort Aguada one of the best tourist destinations to Visit in Goa.
