The Indian Himalayas are a paradise for trekking enthusiast. It is a place where adventurers understand that it’s not for nothing, this majestic mountain range is popular world over. While trekking in the Indian Himalayas is mostly a hassle-free affair in terms of permits and permission, there are few destinations where Inner Line Permit (ILP), Protected Area Permit (PAP), and even permission from local police or forest department is required.
Ladakh: Ladakh only requires Inner Line Permit at selective places like Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley, Khardung La, Tso Moriri, Turtuk, and Dah Hanu Villages. For these destinations in Ladakh an Environment Fee of INR 300 and Red Cross Fund Fee of INR 100 has to be paid. The permit is valid for 1 week.
Jammu & Kashmir: In Kashmir Valley, where the majority of the treks of the union territory are, no permit is required. For a handful of treks permission is required from the local police station.
Himachal Pradesh: In Himachal Pradesh, a small number of treks required an Inner Line Permit and Interline Permit. The domestic tourists require an Interline Permit if they are trekking close to the Chinese border area. The foreign tourists, however, require an Inner Line Permit to visit Khab, Samdo, Dhankar, Tabo, Gompa, Kaza, Morang and Dubling in the Lahaul & Spiti area.
Uttarakhand: In Uttarakhand, some important treks require either an Inner Line Permit or a permission from SDM (Sub District Magistrate), LIU, Gram Panchayat and even permission from the Forest Department.
Sikkim: Trekking permits in Sikkim are issued from the district headquarters of the location where the trek is situated. The SDM Office, Tourist Offices, and Forest Department Office have the authority to issue the trekking permits in Sikkim. For Green Lake trek in North Sikkim an Alpine Mountaineering Expedition permit is required along with the PAP.
