Firinghi Kalibari Temple is a popular temple in Kolkata which is dedicated to Goddess Kali. Located on B.B. Ganguly Street, it is an oasis of silence and peace amidst the incessant commotion of Bowbazaar. It is believed to be more than 500 years old. The temple gets its name after its association with a European - Anthony Firingee, originally known as Hensman Anthony. He was a Portuguese who converted into Hinduism and became a great devotee of Goddess Kali.
History of Firinghi Kalibari Temple
Doubts exist regarding the history of Firinghi Kalibari Temple. There is a plaque at the temple which traces its history from 905 Bengali Year (1498 AD). It is also said that this must-visit Hindu sacred tourist site in Kolkata was constructed by Srimanta Dom. Since Srimanta belonged to a so called lower caste, hence, the temple did not have a priest initially. It was he who performed all the duties of a priest.
