Bharat Koop is an enormous well located in close proximity to the village of Bharatpur. The village is located about 20 km west of Chitrakoot. Like many of the other popular tourist attractions in Uttar Pradesh, it is associated with an interesting episode in the Hindu mythological epic, Ramayana. It is also regarded as a major pilgrimage site for Hindus.
According to Ramayana, Lord Bharata knew that his brother, Lord Rama, was the rightful heir to the throne. Since he was residing in the forest, he wanted to perform the crowning ceremony in the jungle itself. Towards that end, Lord Bharata collected water from all the sacred rivers and holiest pilgrimage destinations across India. Lord Rama, however, declined to be crowned as the king even in the jungle. This put Bharata in a fix, since he did not know what to do with all the holy water that he had collected. Upon the advice of Sage Atri, he poured the water in a well, and from that day onwards, it came to be known as Bharat Koop (well).
It is believed that taking a bath in this well is the same as taking a bath in the holiest pilgrimage destinations of India. A temple dedicated to Lord Bharata lies in close proximity to the Bharat Koop, along with a temple dedicated to the four brothers in Ramayana. It is known as Char Bhaiyo Ka Mandir. Pilgrims visiting this religious destination in Chitrakoot can often be seen enjoying a bath in its holy waters. According to their beliefs, doing so washes away all the sins one may have accumulated over one’s lifetime. An interesting fact associated with this water is that it tastes different every time you fetch it from the well.
Apart from the temple and the well itself, this place is also a haven for those seeking solitude and tranquillity. The greenery all around, the spiritual aura and peaceful surroundings, all come together to make this place extremely popular among devotees.
