Festivals in Mizoram

The majority of the festivals celebrated in Mizoram reflect their tribal heritage and culture. There are three famous festivals celebrated in Mizoram: Chapchar Kut, Pawl Kut and Mim Kut. All three of these Mizoram festivals revolve around agriculture and celebrate the arrival of spring with feasts and beautiful traditional dance performances.

Chapchar Kut is celebrated in March, at a time when bamboos and trees are kept for drying to have them burnt for Jhum cultivation. According to locals, Chapchar Kut has been celebrated since the 15th century. In modern times, it has become the most popular festival celebrated in Mizoram.

Mim Kut is another famous festival of Mizoram which celebrates the harvesting of the maize crop, and pays respect to the ancestors. Pawl Kut is celebrated for two whole days during the months of December and January, and is counted among the popular festivals celebrated in Mizoram. It celebrates the great harvest of straw and is considered to be somewhat similar to thanksgiving. Rice beer is greatly relished by the people during this festival.
