If there's any place that captures the essence of Matheran than it has to be the Charlotte Lake. Apart from being the main source of water for the people of Matheran, the lake is an ideal place to spend some peaceful time, away from the hustle-bustle of the city life. The lake is set amidst the densely forested area, sprawls out with a dam at one end and the Pisarnath temple at the other. Also, from the lake, one can see get to see the view of the famous vantage point of Matheran - Echo Point and Louisa Point. Best time to witness its sublime beauty will be monsoon as this is when one can see the shadow of the scenic view of the mountain dancing on the pristine water of the lake. Birdwatching is also a popular activity at the lake, especially during dawn and dusk.
Getting There
In Matheran, movement of buses and cars are strictly not allowed. That's why to move from one place to other, people trek or travel or horseback. Even to reach Charlotte Lake, tourists will have to walk; nearest landmark will be the railway station of Matheran that is hardly two kilometer away.
