The Jijamata Udyan or also known as the Byculla Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in India that has evolved into a much visited tourist spot now. It is located at the heart of the city, Mumbai. It is built over a huge area of land and also comprises of a beautiful garden apart from the zoo. The garden holds some unique and rare collection of trees and there are almost 3213 trees in number. Many flowers and herbal plants are also found here. The zoo also houses many endangered species. The Asiatic lion, jungle cat, palm civet cat, porcupine, gaur, mouse deer, leopard and the common otter are some of the rare species found in this zoo. There is separate birds section here that houses variety of birds like peacock, flamingos, peahen and many others. The Byculla zoo had recently been renovated and many more species of birds and animals have been newly introduced in the zoo. Now you can see not only native species of animals here but also many international creatures have found shelter in the famous zoo. You can view many penguins and pangolins in the zoo as well.
History of the Attraction
The Jijamata Udyan whose former name was Ranichi Bagh meaning the Queen’s garden was established in the year 1861. The original British name of the zoo was Victoria Gardens. This zoo cum garden has been enriching our country’s heritage since ages and is still continuing to do so.
Getting There
The Byculla zoo or the Jijamata Udyan is located just in the opposite direction of the Byculla station. Once you reach the station it will take hardly a few minutes to walk down to the zoo. As for the western side, the Mumbai central station is nearest to the zoo and from here taxis are available which carry passengers to the zoo.
Things to do and see in and around
The Byculla zoo in Mumbai also holds a museum which has been designed by a London architect. The museum contains various valuable collections of Indian architecture and work of art. After the renovation the museum has a 3D theatre and many animal rides where the kids can enjoy themselves. There are many gift shops from where you can buy small gifts for your friends and family.
There are lovely eateries in and around the zoo for the visitors to sit and relax.

The zoo remains open on all days of the week except Wednesday from 9am to 5:30 pm.
Entry Fee
For Adults: Rs.20 per person.
For kids: Rs.10 per child.
Best Time to Visit
The Byculla zoo visit is best relished in the winter months from November to February.
