Housing a large number of historic pieces like swords, jewellery, rocks, etc. and displaying a collection of fauna like the lion, sloth bear, and tailed macaque, the State Museum and Zoo of Thrissur is something one must definitely visit. Started in 1885, the museum is spread over an area of 5.5 hectors of land in the heart of Thrissur Town. A lot of visitors, especially the school children, visit this popular attraction to observe the exquisite wildlife of Kerala and to catch a glimpse of ancient Kerala through its museum.
Highlights
There are a variety of fauna like the lion, species of birds and deer in the zoo, however, the visitors love the snake park, which has a reptilian collection of King Cobras, Cobras, Python, Kraits, Vipers, monkeys, pink flamingo, and Rat Snakes. The Thrissur State Museum and Zoo are located in the same compound and there is only a public road between the two, which separates the Zoo from Museum. Both the Zoo & Museum offers an amazing experience to the visitors and research students.
There is an Art Museum in the zoo compound, which display a superb collection of wood-carvings, metal sculptures, Kathakali figures, ancient jewellery, and a splendid assortment of traditional Kerala lamps. One can also see a large number of historic items here such as swords, stuffed butterflies, religious idols, etc. Besides this, there is a botanical garden in the same compound, which open on all day from 10 AM to 5 PM except Mondays.
Other Facts
The Thrissur Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the country, and is home to a variety of animals, reptiles, and birds. The art museum inside the zoo showcases the socio-cultural heritage of the region.
