Have you ever explored an extensive variety of life amidst a humming metro! If not, then visit Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary which is situated in the heart of Kochi, Kerala. Popular as the 'green lung of Kochi', it's very famous for the mangrove vegetation and a home to various species of migratory birds. It's a true mangrove area that has shallow lake surrounded by thick mangrove vegetation. Placed behind the Kerala high court building, it is a perching place for several kinds of resident and migratory birds. Sprawled over 2.74 hectares of area, the sanctuary is a perfect paradise for birders. Thickly planted with a variety of trees and plants, this sanctuary enjoys a pleasant temperature.
Flora and Fauna
A few mangrove and mangrove associate species existing in this sanctuary are Avicennia officinalis, Rhizophora mucronata, Acanthus ilicifolius and Acrostichum aureum.
The recent survey says that now there are around six species of mammals like painted bat, Indian flying-fox house rat/black rat, three-striped palm squirrel/dusky palm squirrel, Bandicota, and Eurasian otter. Apart from above, wildlife lovers can also view a species of amphibians like Limnonectes limnocharis and Duttaphrynus melanostictus. Other species of fishes like Anabas testudineus, striped panchax, Orange chromide, Etroplus suratensis, Malabar swamp eel, Blackline rasbora and Sarotherodon mossambica are also found.
A watch tower in the sanctuary overlooking the splendid view of the sanctuary is a major attraction for tourists. A free nature camp is also conducted here by the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department to attract visitors from different parts of the world.
Best Time to Visit: January to March is the best time visit here. It remains open from 9 AM to 6 PM.
