Heart Transplant Surgery in India

A heart transplant is performed to replace a diseased or a failing heart with a healthy one obtained from a brain-dead donor. The heart transplant as a treatment option is usually reserved for individuals whose condition has not improved with medicines or other surgeries.

Eligibility Criteria For Heart Transplant Surgery

A heart transplant is recommended for patients who did not see any progress in their condition with other treatments, leading to end-stage heart failure. Heart failure can occur due to:

  • Cardiomyopathy (weakening of the heart muscle)
  • Heart valve disease
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Congenital heart defect
  • Ventricular arrhythmias
  • Failure of a previous heart transplant

One may not be a good candidate for a heart transplant if he/she:

  • Is at an advanced age, which would affect the recovery from the transplant surgery
  • Has other serious medical conditions that can shorten the life span, like severe liver, lung, or kidney disease
  • Has an active infection
  • Has a history of cancer
  • Is unwilling to make lifestyle changes required to keep the donor heart healthy

Procedure For Heart transplant surgery

A heart transplant is an open-heart surgery, which takes several hours.

Before the procedure, general anaesthesia will be administered to sedate the patient. The patient will be connected to a heart-lung bypass machine to keep the body's oxygen-rich blood flowing.

An incision is made on the chest, the chest bone is separated, and the rib cage is opened to allow access to the heart.

The diseased heart is then removed, and the donor's heart is sewed into the place. The major blood vessels are attached to the donor's heart. Usually, the new heart starts beating when the blood flow is restored. Occasionally, an electric shock is given so that the donor's heart beats properly.

Medicines will be given to manage post-operative pain. The patient will be attached to a ventilator to help him breathe. Tubes will be attached to the chest to drain fluids from the heart and lungs; other tubes will be attached to provide fluids and medications.
