Craniotomy Surgery in India

All elective craniotomies refers to a set of surgical procedures used to treat medical conditions in which the patient suffers from a blood clot in the brain or traumatic brain injury or brain lesion. During this procedure, a craniotomy surgery is performed on patients suffering from traumatic brain injury or brain lesions. This type of craniotomy procedure involves removal of bone flap from the skull to have access to the problem area of the brain.

An injury to the brain, a lesion or a blood clot is mostly diagnosed with the help of a few tests that include MRI, arteriogram and CT Scan. The surgical or treatment approach followed in all elective craniotomy depends on the type of trauma or injury that the patient is suffering from. For example, during the surgical procedure a deep brain stimulator may be implanted for the treatment epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and cerebellar tremor.

During the craniotomy procedure, brain imaging, extracellular recording and neurological manipulations such as chemical titration are used for removal of the damaged brain tissues. Human craniotomy is normally carried out under general anaesthesia. Sometimes, local anaesthesia is used, during which the patient remains awake while the surgery is being performed.
