In vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are sometimes used at the same time to maximize the chances of conception in childless couples. IVF with ICSI is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) used for the treatment of male infertility, whereas IVF alone is used for the treatment of female fertility as well.
ICSI treatment involves retrieval of sperms from the body of the father or that of a donor. Out of all the sperms, a single, healthy sperm is selected to be used for fertilization.
During the treatment, sperm injection is administered, which contains the selected sperm. It is injected into the egg retrieved from the mother or female donor directly. Next, fertilization takes place and the zygote is made to undergo rapid multiplication under laboratory condition.
At the blastocyst stage, the fertilized egg is placed into the womb of the mother for implantation. The cycle is considered to be successful when the zygote embeds itself to the wall of the uterus and starts multiplying further. This is when pregnancy happens. The number of cycles required depends on the time it takes for it to be successful.
