Fontan Surgery in India

Fontan also known as the Fontan Procedure or the “Fontan Kreutzer Procedure” is a palliative surgical procedure used in children with univentricular hearts. It involves diverting the venous blood from the IVC and SVC to the pulmonary arteries without passing through the morphologic right ventricle. This helps patients whose right ventricle generally only possesses slight function if any function at all. This procedure is generally done on children aging 2 to 5 years old when the heart problem is discovered by doctors. If the heart condition is not caught early, the procedure is generally done when the child experiences the earliest detectable stages of heart failure. Afterwards, blood is pumped through the lungs without the failed heart ever having to do more work.

Congenital Heart Disease is an abnormality that developed before the child is even born. These heart problems can be detected and fixed at any point in the persons’ life. These conditions are remedied soon as they start affecting the person. Some serious cases of heart disease may require a heart transplant if not caught until the most advanced stages.

Congenital Heart Replacement Surgery gives a patient born with a congenital heart defect the chance to live with normal blood circulation. If the transplant goes well, the flow and circulation may be even better than ever for the affected patient.
