Dedicated to Lord Murugan, this sacred Hindu shrine in Sydney is one of the most important temples in Australia for Tamil people. 5. Sri Venkateswara Temple, Sydney

Built on a 400-ft hilly area, Sri Venkateswara Temple (SVT) in Helensburgh, Sydney is one of the famous Hindu temples in the southern hemisphere. Dedicated to Lord Venkateswara or Balaji, this temple is situated amidst the grove which truly makes it a place worth visiting. Said to be the only man-made cave temple, Mukti-Gupteshwar in New South Wales is also considered the 13th Jyotirlingam. In this one-of-its-kind Lord Shiva temple, a 10-metre deep vault is created which has about 2 million handwritten notes each saying ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ from devotees around the globe. There is also water from 81 rivers including major rivers of Australia and five oceans in the world along with eight precious metals. The vault also has good wishes from holy men and other dignitaries around the world. Mukti-Gupteshwar is a complex in which replicas of 12 Jyotirlingams, 108 Rudra Shiva and 1008 Sahastra nama Lord Shiva are erected. Gracing the city of Sydney is the beautiful temple of Goddess Durga. 23. Sri Selva Vinayakar Temple, South Maclean

Selva Vinayakar Temple is situated amidst natural scenic beauty, in proximity to the Logan River at South Maclean, an area of where ample peace and inspiration exist. The temple was constructed in the year 1995 in traditional Indian style in accordance with ancient Sitpa Sastra and Agamas. A beautiful tower (Gopuram) and ornamental icons are also constructed in the temple by the Indian sculptures. The vimanam over the sanctum sanctorum with its stupi, stands at a height of about 20 feet above the ground level. On the right of the Central Shrine is the deity of Lord Shiva and on the left is Goddess Parvati. The temple also has deities of Lord Murugan, the shrines of Navagrah and Vairavar are located in their respective places close to the main entrance. This holy shrine also serves as a centre for various cultural and educational activities where religious classes are conducted for kids; music and dance programs are also held in the temple in which scholars and religious leaders are invited to address the devotees on special occasions.

24. Gayatri Mandir, Brisbane

This is said to be the first temple in Brisbane which opened its door for devotees in 1992. The holy shrine aims at enhancing the Hindu religion and culture by celebrating all major festivals and focussing on the future and ensuring that appropriate attention is given to religious, social and welfare issues that benefit all of us, especially the younger generation. The temple also aims at fostering the Hindu way of life, philosophy and practices; providing facilities for the promotion and understanding of Hinduism; establishing educational foundation for the teaching of Hindu philosophy, culture, Indian languages and other related subjects; and performing philanthropy.

25. Om Shree Deveshwar Mahadev Shiv Mandir, Brisbane

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Om Shree Deveshwar Mahadev Shiv Mandir was built recently in the year 2015 in Brisbane. The shrine is situated in a beautiful garden and is made from all-natural materials, including a hand carved Nandi Bull and Shivalinga in a beautiful black granite. Set in the serene ashram garden, the temple radiates harmony, peace and divinity along with opportunity to learn the ancient science of yoga in its premises.

26. Shree Sita Ram Mandir, Sydney

The holy Sita Ram Temple is situated in Carramar, Sydney and was built in the year 2000 after the devotees start to increase. The unique thing about this Hindu temple is that it celebrates all religious occasions in their entirety throughout the year. During major religious festivals the mandir is filled with devotees thronging from all parts of Sydney. The temple houses several deities including that of Lord Ram and consort Sita and each statues is carved from a single piece of granite, which reflects intricate skills craftsmen of Jaipur. The life size deities are the main attraction in the temple.

27. Sri Karphaga Vinayakar Temple, Sydney

Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Sri Karphaga Vinayagar Temple is located at the heart of Sydney. Karphaga is the Tamil for the Sanskrit derivation of Kalpaga/ Kalpataru, which is ‘the wish fulfilling celestial tree spoken;’ it is believed standing under the shade of this tree, whatever one thinks can come true. Likewise, Karphaga Vinayakar answers the prayers of devotees who come seeking for his help. Apart from Lord Ganesha, the temple houses deities of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Vishnu, Ayyapa/Dharma Shasta, Murugan, Bhairava, and the structure of Navgraha. On a regular basis, cultural events, religious discussions and music recitals take place in the temple and the devotees and temple authority endeavour to work for peace and harmony at all levels.
