Summer Destinations to Visit with Young Kids in India

As an aunt to several little ones in the family, I understand how difficult it gets for the one who is taking care of the infant. It is indeed a challenge to be a parent and make a balance with your old life and the new one. Parents have to give up way too much and that of course includes staying away from travelling to raise their little ones right. But I am glad to have encountered many parents who fancy the idea of travelling with young kids. I have been getting a lot queries about places where parents can visit with their kids that are a few months old. Well, let me first tell you that I am so proud of you because I understand how dealing with all the cranky behavior and health issues of kids can get on the nerves especially when one is travelling AND considering all that fact if you are still ready to travel with babies then you certainly deserve a standing ovation. Since, I am getting at least 4-5 queries related to summer destinations to visit in India with young kids, I thought I would come up with a blog, you know, for the convenience of all. I am dividing this blog state-wise so that it is easy for you to pick the closest summer destination. So here we go!

In Kashmir

The best part about this beautiful Himalayan destination is its easy access. You can simply take a flight to Srinagar if you are seeking convenience (Psst… flight fare of Srinagar is quite low when you book in advance). Now, your tiny toddler might not understand why it is important to stay in a boathouse or see the flowers in Mughal Gardens but the fact that everything in Srinagar comes handy will at least help the weight off your shoulder. For kids between 6-12, Srinagar can be a nice experience, witnessing the lofty mountains and everything scenic around can give your kids ample to boast to their friends when they get back home.

How to Reach Srinagar

Srinagar by Air: Named Sheikh ul Alam Airport, is an international airport in Srinagar. This airport offer regular flights from Srinagar to Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh. The airport is placed just 15kms away from the center of the city.

Srinagar by Train: To reach Srinagar by train, one has to reach either Jammu Tawi or Udhampur Railway Station. These stations offer a number of trains to different parts of India. From both the stations, you can hire taxis, private as well as the state government buses to reach Srinagar.

If Gulmarg was a person, it would have been one of those smooth talkers, good looking guy/girl who is liked by everyone in the college (Did I get too carried away. Eh?). All right coming back to the point, Gulmarg is one good looking place that is truly a delight for nature lovers. If you are travelling here with kids in summer, you might not find many options for activities and might have to stick with sightseeing. But if spreading a sheet under the warm sun over the lush green meadow surrounded by snow-capped mountains is your idea of enjoyment, then Gulmarg is a perfect picnic destination for you and your kids. Your tiny ones can enjoy the fresh and clean air and the warmth of sun, while slightly older kids can enjoy running around or playing ball.

Kids’ Attraction: Kongdori, Ningle Nallah and Ferozpore Nallah are ideal for picnics.

How to Reach Gulmarg

Gulmarg by Air: The nearest airport to Gulmarg is at Srinagar, some 56kms away. Tourists can take local taxis or cabs from outside of the airport to reach Gulmarg.

Gulmarg by Railways: The railhead is well connected from Jammu. There are a number of trains that are available from different parts of India. You can get down at the railway station and catch a bus or taxi to reach Gulmarg.

Sonmarg

Have you dreamt about the feeling of clouds under the feet? Well, this is the place where you might want to realize this dream of yours. Amidst pristine nature and with people who matter to you the most, a holiday is more than a success in Sonmarg. Although sightseeing and nature walks are the only things that can be enjoyed when you have young kids with you, however doing it here in Sonmarg has its own charm. In case you have kids between 6-10years of age you can surely take them for trout fishing in Sonmarg. Not only the kids will enjoy this newly introduced activity but it can keep them engaged for long hours. Other options would be to go on short treks (may be to Thajiwas Glacier) or camping by the riverside. And for parents of infants I would say, you can enjoy the incredible views that Sonmarg has to offer.

How to Reach Sonmarg

Sonmarg by Air: The nearest airport is Srinagar at a distance of 70 kilometres, which is connected to all major airports and flights. Taxis are available from Sonmarg to Srinagar airport.

Sonmarg by Road: State-run buses from Jammu and Srinagar are available daily. You can also take the special deluxe buses available from Jammu and Srinagar to Sonmarg.

Sonmarg by Train: The nearest train station is Jammu, which is about 132kms from Sonmarg and is well connected by all the major train routes in the country.

Pahalgam

Situated on the confluence of River Lidder and Lake Sheshnag, Pahalgam is a pretty little destination that is ideal for family vacation in India. Pahalgam unlike Sonmarg is commercialized, thus you get more facilities right at your doorstep or hotel’s doorstep, if I may say. There are number of places for sightseeing. Stop by the saffron fields to teach your kids how saffron is grown or go slow on the roads to show them where do walnuts come from. Let them enjoy a run in the pine tree valleys collecting as many acorns as their little hands can pick. Pahalgam is dotted with multiple picnic spots by the stream, which means you can pack yourself some food and enjoy a picnic at some of the most scenic sites. At Baisaran, your kids will enjoy rolling down the hills and over the open meadows. You can also introduce the kids to little rabbits, sheeps and the rare Pashmina goats.

How to Reach Pahalgam

Pahalgam by Air: Srinagar airport is the nearest airport to Pahalgam which is approximately 95kms away. The Srinagar airport is well-connected to other major cities like New Delhi, Jammu, Leh, Mumbai and Chandigarh. Once you reach at the airport, you can hire a taxi or a cab which will take you to Pahalgam.

Pahalgam by Road: Pahalgam is well-connected with Srinagar and Jammu. Regular bus services are available from Srinagar and Anantnag. You can choose from state-run buses or a special luxurious coach by any private tour agency.

Pahalgam by Train: The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi, which is at a distance of 157kms. Jammu is well-linked with most of the Indian cities. From here, you would need a vehicle which can drive you to Pahalgam via Srinagar.

In Himachal Pradesh

Shimla

Shimla is like one tried, tested and approved destination in Himachal Pradesh to visit with kids. Average elevation, beautiful landscape and salubrious climate make this touristy place ideal for your kids. Shimla has good connectivity and apparently this is the reason why parents choose it. Yes, there are few places where the vehicles are not allowed, but then, a bit of walking is compulsory as far as hill station is concerned. The Kalka-Shimla Toy Train ride is what your young kids can look forward to enjoy, you can help them understand the difference between other trains and this special one. Also, Kufri, near Shimla is a big YES for the kids, the Yak rides available here are enjoyed quite a lot by children as well as adults. Also, the amusement park, Hip Hip Hurray is an attraction for kids. There is a plethora of fun activities for children, from boating to bumper cars and kiddies’ helicopters, endless fun and excitement options are at the avail of the little ones here.

How to Reach Shimla

Shimla by Air: Chandigarh is the nearest operational airport near Shimla and is 114kms away. You can easily get a taxi from the airport to get to Shimla or you can ask your hotel to arrange for an airport transfer.

Shimla by Bus: There are several bus services including Himachal Road Transport Corporation buses as well as private operators connecting Shimla to the major cities in North India. Buses go in the morning or later at night – timings can vary from season to season. You can check them online before making a reservation.

Shimla by Train: There is a small railway station in Shimla that connects it to Kalka by a narrow gauge rail track. The famous toy train of Shimla goes between Kalka and Shimla, covering a distance of 96 kilometres in about 7 hours. Kalka on the other hand is the nearest rail head, which connects it to Chandigarh and Delhi by regular trains.

Manali

Manali is one of the most sought after destinations in Himachal Pradesh. Blessed with beautiful landscape and pleasant weather, Manali makes an ideal place to visit with family and young kids. Yes, it may get a bit hectic to reach Manali, when travelling from Delhi or other destinations with a distance of 500kms or more but a visit here is truly worth it. Besides, the roads leading to Manali are well-paved, so it turns out be a happy journey all through (Psst… Don’t forget to pack Avomine or any other effective medicine that helps stop the giddy feeling, you can also ask the pediatrician to refer the safe medicine for the kids as well.

Your children can enjoy a visit to Rohtang Pass, apart from it the Solang Valley is quite a place for an outing with kids in Manali. In summer, paragliding, zorbing and a couple of other activities are available for the kids. For parents of infants, it is easier to travel from one place to another by car. Also, make sure you book a hotel closer to the Mall Road.

How to Reach Manali

Manali by Air: The nearest airport is at Bhuntar, which is located about 50kms away from Manali. Domestic flights connect Bhuntar with Delhi and Chandigarh. Once at the airport, you can take a pre-paid taxi to Manali.

Manali by Bus: Manali is connected to important tourist destinations like Leh, Shimla, Kullu, Dharamshala and New Delhi by means of a network of state-run as well as private buses.

Kasauli

A hill station with a colonial set-up, Kasauli is a sleepy town that is adorned with green rolling Himalayan hills, mixed forest of pine, oak and huge horse-chestnut. The town is ideal for spending a holiday in peace and enjoying the sweetness of doing nothing at all (except sightseeing). Like other destinations in this blog, Kasauli is also easily accessible, so if you have kids that cannot still walk or may be learning to walk, it is an ideal place to bring them. Yes, you might have to skip an attraction or two (depending upon your strength to carry your kids on a carrier) but then you wouldn’t feel that you have missed much because Kasauli’s natural beauty will make up for everything.

How to Reach Kasauli

Kasauli is 305kms from Delhi and the best way to visit is hire cab or one can also take a bus till Chandigarh from Delhi and then take a cab to Kasauli. Chandigarh is at a short distance of 58kms from Kasauli.

Dalhousie

Dalhousie is a pretty hill station in Himachal Pradesh that is situated at the altitude ranging between 6000 and 9000 feet. Surrounded by scenic snow-capped peaks, the hill station makes for an ideal summer holiday destination in India. Since nature’s beauty is the catch of the place, Dalhousie is a destination for both young and old. You can expect a pleasant holiday here amidst serene nature. Kids will enjoy walks to scenic places like Diankund and Ganji Pahari and visiting places like Chamera Lake and Jandri Ghat. Picnicking at Panchpula is also a good plan to enjoy the slow paced life in Dalhousie. Apart from it, Khajjiar, also known as the Mini Switzerland is a lovely place to visit. How to Reach Dalhousie

There are no direct means of public transport between Dalhousie and Delhi, therefore one has to first reach Dharamshala or Pathankot and then take a cab to reach Dalhousie. However, direct cabs can be booked from Delhi.

It is said that in 1929, Mahatma Gandhi stayed here for 14 days at the Anasakti Ashram while writing his book titled ‘Anasakti Yoga’ and was greatly impressed by the beauty of the town. For those who wish to spend a summer holiday with kids, Kausani is an apt choice. Easily accessible and full of nature’s beauty and of course quiet and calm, it is everything that a hill station should be.

Lansdowne

The beautiful town of Lansdowne is in the south of Pauri en route Kotdwar and is surrounded by thick oak and blue pine forests. It is quite a charming place for a family holiday as it is devoid of the usual hustle and bustle. Lansdowne attracts people with its pleasany climate and natural beauty. You can expect this place to be spic and span and organized as it is the home to Garhwal Rifles. Most of the attraction can be reached by walking but if you have kids I suggest you take a car ride to the destinations. There is a small lake called Bhullatal where kids can enjoy boating and looking at the cute rabbits and hamsters.

Darjeeling

In Tamil Nadu
